- Prokolin is a useful addition to the First Aid cupboard. It is a probiotic with absorbent properties that is safe to use as a first line of defence.
- If your dog has loose stools but still has an appetite, try feeding them pumpkin, butternut squash or sweet potatoes to bulk them up. However if the diarrhoea is watery/severe and your dog is off their food, feed them bland food only (cooked chicken with no bones and boiled rice) little and often over 24 hours and give ample access to water. You can give them Dioralyte or other elctrolyte powders, in addition to their drinking water, to help keep them hydrated. It used to be the case that you would fast a dog for 24 hours but vets are coming round to the bland food treatment instead.
- Once your dog has been fasted, try feeding them tinned Chappie for a couple of days until they have fully recovered. It is very easily digested and is more likely to be tolerated if their stomachs are still sore.
- Merc Viv is a homeopathic remedy for the treatment of diarrhoea
- Tree bark Powder soothes the entire digestive tract and helps slow the passage of food, increasing absorption, firming stools and easing discomfort.
