ear cleaner recipe

This is known in America as Miracle Blue Ear Cleaner or Purple Stuff! All ingredients can be easily found on EBay:

  • 500ml bottle isopropyl alcohol 70% (sometimes called rubbing alcohol)
  • 4 tbsp boric acid
  • 16 drops of 1% (1gr/100ml) gentian violet (Methyl Violet 10B)
  • Applicator bottle (any bottle with a nozzle attached, hair salon types shown on the right are ideal)
Picture
Mix all ingredients in the alcohol bottle before decanting into applicator. Shake well to mix the boric acid before each use. Warm gently by placing applicator bottle in a mug of warm water, then flood the ear, massaging for a count of 60 before gently wiping.

NB: This is a gentle and easily tolerated treatment, if your dog responds with signs of pain then take them to a vet immediately as it could be indicative of a perforated eardrum.

The alcohol dries out the ear, whilst the boric acid neutralises the alkaline environment making it inhospitable to both yeasts and gram negative bacteria. The gentian violet is both antiseptic and antifungal and is especially effective against yeasts such as candida and malassezia pachydermatis.
